Tattoo Pain

The process of getting inked involves puncturing your skin to insert the pigment. Inevitably this will cause some pain. The amount of pain that you feel will depend on a number of factors relating to the tattoo itself, as well as your own individual tolerance level. Everyones tolerance of pain is different, some people find getting inked very uncomfortable, while many tattoo enthusiasts positively enjoy tattoo pain. Either way, the associated pain is an unavoidable element of getting inked.

Some body areas are more painful to tattoo than others. Generally speaking, fleshy areas with more muscle and bone (e.g. upper arm) tend to hurt less, while very bony areas (e.g. ankle) tend to be more painful to ink. If you would like more information about all of the commonly tattooed areas of the body please visit the Tattoo Body Areas section of this website.

Another factor that dictates the level of pain experienced by someone getting tattooed is the size and complexity of the design being inked. Larger, more complex designs take longer to ink and therefore the associated pain has to be endured for an extended period of time. If you are planning an extremely large tattoo that will take many hours to complete, talk to your artist about breaking up the inking into several shorter sessions.

When you are ready to get your tattoo inked, there are a few things that you can do to help make yourself more comfortable during the inking process. If you find the tattoo pain very uncomfortable, try listening to music to distract your mind away from the tattooing. If it becomes too overwhelming let your artist know, they will give you a break or allow you to come back later. Dont worry about what anyone might think or say, its far more important to be comfortable.

The phrase “no pain no gain” is very appropriate for the practice of tattooing, and is something that has to be endured if you want to get inked. That said, the associated pain is one of the reasons that many people become somewhat addicted to getting tattooed, and keep coming back for more tattoo pain.
