Tattoo Costs

Chopper TattooThe cost of getting a new tattoo varies widely from tens of dollars up in to the thousands of dollars. The price that you pay depends on a number of factors such as the size and complexity of the design, the colours used, the reputation, experience, and skill level of your artist, as well as the reputation of the shop they work out of. Many artists charge an hourly rate, and so the price of a new tattoo will largely depend upon how long your new tattoo takes to complete. Having an artist design you a custom tattoo will also put the cost up, but will make your tattoo unique.

Getting a new tattoo can be expensive, but you really do get what you pay for. I recommend that you save up for a design that you really like, and get your tattoo inked by a reputable artist with an excellent record of workmanship and safety. Tattoos are forever so it really is worth spending the extra cash to get your design just right. Also, the dangers associated with tattooing are very real and it really isn’t worth putting yourself at risk in order to save a few dollars (see the Tattoo Safety page for more information on the risks associated with tattooing and how to minimise them). Never choose a tattoo parlour and artist because they are cheap, they will be cheap for a reason.  I recommend that you go to the other end of the spectrum and choose one of the more expensive shops in your area.  This will help ensure that you get a really great tattoo in a safe environment, inked by a professional who can charge higher prices because of the quality of their work.

Once you have some ideas for the design that want, go and talk to some highly reputable artists who will be able to give you an accurate quote. You should also check out photos of their previous work to make sure that their workmanship and artistic style is what you are looking for (please see the Getting A Tattoo, and Tattoo Safety sections for more information about selecting a tattoo artist and tattoo shop). Remember to factor a tip for your artist into the total cost. If your artist does exceptional work then it is worth rewarding them. This will ensure that they will always welcome your future business no matter how busy they are.
